When traveling from the U.S. to DRC to visit the education project she spearheaded along with AMCAV's director, Bernadette (bottom-right), Annette selected other team members including Congolese activist Neema Namadamu (bottom-left), Jean-Jacques De Christ Nganya of Pax Christi Uvira (top-center, right), a translator, a driver, and a photographer-videographer.

At the first of the three schools supported by the project, Annette chose as her emphasis interviews with several of the students.

Annette wanted to hear how attending school changed the kids' lives. They were happy to be in school, yes; but their lives had not changed, they reported. They remained hungry. The schools do not have an easy way to offer food, and the AMCAV program cannot afford to finance it.

As a member of the stigmatized albino minority, Gertride was too ashamed to show her face when the program began in 2011. In 2013, her confidence had increased and she smiled openly with Annette.
