About Us

It started with a classroom of 7th graders on a Sunday morning. Their mission was to select a social justice project for the upcoming year. One girl had heard of the problem of rape in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and suggested helping the victims' children. One personal connection led to another, and before they knew it, the class had found the Association of Christian Mothers for Assistance to Vulnerables (AMCAV), a small Congolese NGO in the volatile South Kivu province of eastern DRC.

AMCAV provides counseling, social reintegration, and income-generating projects (when funding is available) for the vulnerable population - the majority of whom are women victims of sexual violence.

After raising money that first year for AMCAV director Bernadette to purchase a bin of clothing for ragged children, the next year of 7th-grade students opted to have their teacher Annette apply for project status on GlobalGiving.org. After extensive due diligence and fundraising, Bernadette and Annette's new project was accepted and their partnership was born. They would send 130 vulnerable, stigmatized children at 3 village schools served by AMCAV to school for the first time.
